A group of 15 people aged between 19 – 49 from North and South London set out three weeks ago to cycle to Africa from London. The challenge was organised by Regenerate Charity aiming to raise £30,000 to continue their work amongst young people in London. Co-Founder Andy Smith established Regenerate in 2000 after moving onto the Alton Estate in Roehampton (one of the biggest housing estates in Europe) and witnessing such isolation, fear and addiction. The money raised from “London – Africa” will fund 100 young people volunteer on different projects within developing countries costing £300.00 per person with the hope to educate, expose and influence them to different parts of the world in need.
Gareth Hawkes, our IT Manager took part in the cycle challenge for the 1stweek from London to Spain. He found the biggest challenge faced as a group was having to change and adjust the navigation when often taking the wrong route, at one stage ending up carrying bikes through a forest only to end up at a river with no crossing.
Phoenix Community Care work closely with Regenerate and both share strong links to an Orphanage and feeding project in Kenya and a school in Romania. For all the bad news that affects young people today, this is a good, hopeful news story.
“London – Africa” has raised £38,000 and there is still time to donate until August 2018 https://www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/regenerate/london2africa
